🌸What a joy it was to see this shared this evening! This pregnancy and birth journey sure has been a ride and I have been truly honoured to have been invited to be a part of it all so far. Sometimes it can feel like we might be pregnant forever as we stomp up and down hills, hand express colostrum and stuff endless pineapple in our faces, then one day in their own sweet time our babes start their own unique little birth dance with us, just like this baby girl 😆
I can’t wait to feel her vibe earth side, she’s going to be one interesting little being I bet! One wish I remember from the start of our doula relationship was that this mother really desired to connect with this pregnancy on a deeper level and to find joy in it. As always my wish was to support these parents in meeting their baby in the most loving way possible but in THEIR own authentic way.
Love and joy is certainly what I witnessed in their connection together in the birth room. What a wonderful birth partner he was, always responding to just what she needed with gentle strength and reassurance. Being, not doing as I did all I could to make sure that they felt safe and supported. Plan A isn’t always possible but what matters is how you feel 💖

This picture was taken by our wonderful doula @doulagemma . We didn't get many pictures of the actual birth as due to COVID rules Gemma couldn't join us at the hospital but I will treasure this one so much.
31 hours in labour, 23 at home supported by Josh, Gemma and the birth pool (who knew water could provide such pain relief). In the end we had to transfer to the hospital instead of birth at home as planned because the homebirth team were overwhelmed that night. But it meant that my midwife Amelie, from the MAST team who supported me through the pregnancy, got to deliver my baby. That was pretty special 🥰
Welcome Esme. You took your sweet time! Guess you'll be one who marches to your own tune rather than going along with what others want from you 🤣

Never stop talking about birth, death, our bodies, minds and souls and all that make life, life at the dinner table! 🌸So many rarely learn firsthand about childbirth before they start entering their own birth journeys. Our menfolk less so. Is it fear, embarrassment, or birth being seen as unimportant, something to simply ‘get through?’ When did mothers or grandmothers stop talking about it? Was it when birth was mostly moved away from our homes? When communities fractured and expanded? How did we get here?? 🌸As a society we would once have learned about birth, life and death within our families, from our elders and wise ones, with shared stories and wisdom. We are now so often growing up feeling detached from our bodies and from the experience of birth. This lack of knowledge and exposure has definitely resulted in a rise in fear around birth. This of course benefits no one, not the birthing person, not the partner and not the care provider. We must normalise sharing our stories and getting real about birth and motherhood. 🌸My children will always grow up knowing that they can freely ask about and talk about birth and parenthood, all that real stuff. I hope that my sons may have the chance to inspire their friends to be confident and not fearful or embarrassed. I hope that my nieces may grow up confident in their bodies to birth if they choose. I know that my son wishes to be an informed and empathetic birth partner if he gets the chance to become a father which he so wants, this is of course testament to normalising birth talk in the home and makes me so happy, add to that that he dreams of me being the doula, let’s hope I’ve still got what it takes! 🌸Let’s keep talking about all that makes life, life with each other. With our mothers, daughters, sisters, loves and sons. The bliss and the pain, by sharing your truth you are not creating or spreading fear, this is how we may change the culture of fear around birth.
