Maybe this excited father to be, first priorities, let’s find support! 😆
In all seriousness though my perfect customer? An ‘ideal client’ is a hard thing to pinpoint as a doula, it’s important to me that I’m there for everyone but it’s definitely a 2 way thing, it’s a big deal to be invited in to someone’s birth journey and I have to feel Im the right fit, we have to vibe. Quite simply my ideal client is someone open and ready to accept all I have to give as a doula. My perfect customer is ready to be held and to take every nurturing, nourishing part of my care they need without feeling that they don’t deserve to be treated like a goddess!
And actually, even if they do at some point feel that deep rooted guilt that we are conditioned to feel when we are being cared for or pampered, I’m there to hold them through that too!
Some common doula misconceptions:
🦋A doula is for home birth. Wrong! I support birth in any environment you choose or need be in, be it at home, hospital or birth centre.
🦋 A doula only supports a ‘natural and unmedicated birth. Wrong! I have no agenda or preferences in your birth. I am simply there to support you meeting your baby in the way that feels right for you or in the way you need. This goes for c section births too.
🦋 Doulas are for hippy alternative mums! I’ve heard this a few times 😆 Wrong again, there’s a doula for everyone, the hippy alternative mum, the spiritual, the conservative. A doula is for any person that wants support, this is not a’hippy’ thing. This is a support in your way thing.
You are actually likely to find that because you’re more open during pregnancy you may feel called to invite in more spiritually nurturing things into your experience 😉
🦋A doula replaces your birth partner. Wrong, a doula supports your partner and empowers them to be the best and most confident birth partner they can be. A doula supports you as you birth together, I don’t replace anyone, not the birth partner or the midwife. I simply and lovingly support.

Day 21 ~ Beliefs and values
❤️Something the Dalai Lama says regularly is ‘My religion is kindness’. Doesn’t that just speak to your heart? One of the promises of Buddhism and most other spiritual practices is that we have the capacity to open our hearts, kindness is woven through them all including the simplicity of mindfulness. If that does speak to the heart that is probably because our natural state is love and kindness. We are born of love.
❤️This is quite true, that we can open our hearts. There are ways to practice this, to wake up our frontal cortex, home to compassion, bonding. We have mirror neurons ( I love them) we have magical hormones such as my favourite motherhood hormone oxytocin, the hormone of love and connection and we do need connection so much.
❤️ What stops us from making kindness our religion? The cult of doing? The trance of Separation? Maybe survival mode and stress? Unkindness, judgement or trauma maybe. So many things can stick to us like Velcro, blocking our natural state. We are protecting ourselves of course, defending ourselves from unkindness.
❤️How would it be to look for kindness around you, to really appreciate it. Pay attention to your patterns, gently allow the heart to open and be present in the now. How do you feel when you cultivate it in your life?even just small acts of kindness even to those you may not deem worthy of it, start with yourself even. Love and kindness are never wasted, they bless both the receiver and giver. With real presence the heart opens, just be kind. Kind to yourself first of all. Awaken to your true nature, you can’t fail at kindness and love. Kindness takes no extra effort, it’s free and it’s liberating. You will discover that kindness is your religion too!

Day 20 being optimistic
Living in this this covid universe optimism can feel quite non existent, it’s not something we hear much of these days unless we seek it. The news is grim and a lot of people are tense and fed up, thank goodness for @thehappynewspaper and other little rays of sunshine!
I’m an optimist though, I’ve always been a sunny side up kind of person... at least that’s what I remember (optimism bias)! My personality never quite matched the gothic dress sense of my teens 😆 My being an optimist in no way means that I’m naive, unrealistic or that I don’t feel sad for sad things, feel angry for injustice and unkindness. I’m simply hopeful for the future and trust that the goodness of people almost always outweighs the bad. I trust that women will continue to rise up and support each other, mothers will continue to find their power and that people are usually kind and capable of so much goodness. I trust that we can birth good things 💖
We are born optimists and that’s a good thing. We are all born with the power to expect great things, the wonderful human talent of ‘mental time travel’. that is the power to imagine ourselves in the future, we may often take this for granted but it has long been crucial for our survival and we’ve all used it to plan ahead. Conscious foresight, it’s a powerful thing!
Hope and optimism are good for our health, fact! It can be a practice though and one of faith. We can be aware of our optimistic illusions, I certainly am but I’m aware of that fact and remain most of the time a glass more than half full, sunny side up person, as always it’s about balance! I highly recommend a ted talk by Tali Sharot, also the book ‘The science of optimism’

Day 19 ~ My chosen path
❤️My chosen path is that of 'women's work'. The greatest honour in my opinion and one I took with an open heart, my soul had been waiting for me to find this sacred path and I was so ready.
❤️My path is varied, it takes me to loving places, heart expanding and breaking places, many new places, intense to walk at times but one I always take with perfect trust ready to journey into that labyrinth of birth and beyond with her as she births herself as mother.
❤️To the birth space I bring a bag of supportive tools, oil to massage the body that works so hard, a scarf to support her, a lavender flax bag to warm and more, but most of all I bring an open heart and loving hands. I watch, I hold space, I listen and I trust. My role is to walk that path with you and to empower and support you when needed not to lead you, I welcome you into motherhood in the most loving way possible. Afterwards I visit much in the same way, with supportive gifts, ritual, massage and of course nourishment but most importantly, open arms and heart and a listening ear. Day 18 ~ Slow down
Sunday is the perfect day for slowness, if possible how would it be to reclaim this as your sacred day of slowness? What a gift it is to bask in a slow and sweet Sunday with my loves, taking a walk together and truly being in the now. As mothers I find that we rarely give ourselves or indeed have many opportunities to slow down, rest and find peaceful balance. The art of slowing down can be a simple way to practice mindfulness, we are often looking for ways to be doing and to be or feel productive but taking at least one day to simply be, to be still, to exist comfortably, listen to your body and soul and to move softly is such a gift. Of course deep lockdown forced slowness in some ways but perhaps not quite our minds and souls, slow day busy mind? I know that’s how I felt for a while! Today was a gift in slowness, slow movement, the slow preparing of our meal listening to the priestess podcast, washing and combing out my youngest boys Afro, this is certainly a slow activity! Just being not much doing. Slow and sweet just for today 💖

I often feel blessed in my women’s work. I’m very aware of how blessed and honoured I am to share in any part of a birth journey and this was no exception.
How sweet it was to sit and witness the gentle unfolding of this mothers birth vision during a birth mandala session!
💖Creating a birth mandala is such a quiet and mindful activity. It’s a beautiful gift to give yourself in itself and in the sacred pause for reflection you take to create. This is your personal, symbolic tool for labour. Having it around in your pregnancy and then using it as a labour tool when you need has a positive effect and activates those ‘mirror neurons’. These are activated when we observe someone or something as well as imagine it happening. Like when we see images or films of birth and formulate ideas and feelings around what we have seen. So surround your self with positive, comforting and empowering imagery, It’s good for the brain and body!
💖 As always I came bearing gifts! a handmade smudge stick all from my garden, rose water body spritz and rose body oil infused with my favourite fragrant pink roses!
